Overview

The Metro South Health Medicines Management Committee invites members of the community to register their interest in joining their committee as a Consumer Representative. The Medicines Management Committee aims to oversee the use of medicines across the Metro South Health Service to make sure they are being used in a safe, effective and fair way. Metro South Health Service looks after the Princess Alexandra, Logan, Beaudesert, Redland, Wynnum and the Queen Elizabeth II hospitals along with a number of community services.  

PRIORITIES FOR THE COMMITTEE

  • To approve medicines-related documents for use across the Health Service.
  • To supervise the development and maintenance of a Health Service guideline to help prescribers to choose the best medicine for their patient.
  • To prepare for the new state laws which govern the use of medicines.
  • To facilitate and encourage standardisation of how medicines are managed across the service.
  • To build and maintain an electronic website for all medicines management procedures.
  • To provide a forum for examining controversial medicines and therapeutic issues and arriving at an agreed position or solution for the Health Service.
  • To optimise the use of medications and reduce unnecessary prescribing in the Health Service.
  • To support the judicious use of antibiotics within the Health Service.
 
EXPECTATIONS OF CONSUMER REPRESENTATIVE
  • Able to speak up and provide a consumer perspective for issues discussed by the Committee.
  • Able to respect and appreciate different perspectives expressed within the Committee.
  • Have enough time to participate in the work of the Committee. This will involve:
  • Attending a 2 hour meeting every 2-3 months.
  • Reading and reviewing documents in preparation for meetings.
  • Commenting via email on documents sent for review in between meetings.
  • Consent to a criminal history check prior to participation on the committee.
 
FREQUENCY OF MEETINGS

Currently the Committee meets every three months, but this may change to every 2 months depending on the amount of work the Committee needs to do.
Meetings are held in Building 5 or Building 19 of the Garden City Office Park, 2404 Logan Road, Eight Mile Plains.

 
SELECTION CRITERIA
  1. Experience or a general interest in medicines.
  2. Good communication skills.
  3. Basic knowledge of healthcare systems.
  4. Have a patient focus.
 
REIMBURSEMENT

This position is voluntary; however the successful applicant will be eligible to claim reimbursement for travel expenses to and from meetings.
